Chapter Nine What Next?

“Kiss me and find out.” He suddenly knocked her against the wall. The noise still drowned out, a sudden drip from the faucet seemed louder than her heart.

“Now?” she stammered. Lexlie wanted to mention the garlic she had for lunch but felt the moment might be lost by it.

“You asked for this, Lexlie. Just promise me you’ll not be disgusted.”

What could she say? It was not a question asked everyday. It can’t be googled. "Do you die by crosses or...garlic?"

He didn't even smile. He shook his head with a no but asked, "Are you intending to find out?"

“Whatever you are, it’s not that much of a freak difference than myself.” She leaned in more. “Unless you intend to drain me. Then it’s a no go. Good money or not, the job’s not worth it.”

He backed his face away, anger brewing fast. “I’m a job to you?”

“Oh, no. You weren’t part of my plan. I didn’t mean to fall for you…” she trailed off. Her face paled. She screwed up.

His head cocked sideways like it did sometimes making hers follow to see straight when he was this close. “Four days and you think you’ve fallen for me. You don’t even know me.”

See, he agreed. It was a welcome pleasure. “I’m glad we agree. I thought I was going crazy. You’re just too good to be true, vampirism aside. Your thoughts are unlike any man I know.”

“How so?” he leaned so his breath was mingling with hers. She noticed how sweet the cool air breathing on her cheek was.

“Clean, warm. Caring. Not vulgar. You’re protective of your friends.”

He seemed to consider this a while. “Maybe you just don’t know me yet?”

“Maybe,” she thought out loud then added, “but first impressions quite often prove to name character when the unknown giver doesn’t know I can hear them. Unfiltered belief systems in the head are generally right on target with what they really think of others and etcetera, etcetera.”

“And you still think I’m the good guy?” His lips hovered, ready.

“No. That was never really what I pinned for you. But then again, I’m not known for being Miss Easily Taken myself.”

Mmm! His inner voice said. Taken.
